Just fought your pool back from green and now it’s gone milky? Good news first: cloudy-after-green is normal, and it’s almost always circulation and filtration catching up, not a missing chemical. Your filter is busy pulling out the dead algae you just killed. The fix is usually free: run the pump longer, clean the filter, and give it a day or two. Reach for a bottle of “clarifier” only after you’ve worked the cheap levers.

Cloudy water just means something is suspended faster than your filter can grab it. So we go down the list from most common and cheapest to least, and stop at the first thing that’s clearly off.

1. Circulation (start here, always)

If your pump runs only a few hours a day, or the returns feel weak, or there are dead spots where the water barely moves, you’ve found it. After a green recovery there’s a lot of fine debris in the water, and it only clears if the water keeps moving through the filter. Run the pump 24/7 while you’re clearing, and going forward aim for at least one full turnover a day.

Want the math? Turnover hours = pool gallons ÷ (pump flow in GPM × 60). An 18,000-gallon pool with a 50 GPM pump turns over in 6 hours. So 8–10 hours a day keeps it sparkling, and running around the clock clears a haze fastest. This is the lever people skip because it isn’t a purchase. It’s also the one that works.

2. Filtration

If circulation’s fine, look at the filter itself. If its pressure gauge sits 8–10 psi above the clean baseline, or it just can’t hold clarity, it’s clogged or spent. Backwash a sand or DE filter, hose off a cartridge, and check whether old sand needs replacing. A filter choked with dead algae can’t clear water no matter how long the pump runs. Empty it out and let it breathe.

3. High pH or scaling (the mineral haze)

If circulation and filtration are both solid and it’s still cloudy, check your balance. When pH climbs above 7.8 and calcium hardness is high (over ~400), the water can oversaturate and throw a fine mineral cloud, sometimes with a gritty white scale. The fast fix is lowering pH back toward 7.4–7.6, which re-dissolves the haze. (You don’t need to memorize the saturation-index number for this: just know high pH plus high calcium equals cloudy, and pH is your quickest lever.)

4. Algae that isn’t actually dead yet

If the cloud has a greenish or dull cast, the walls feel slick, and your free chlorine keeps dropping, the bloom isn’t finished. It rebounded. That’s not a clarity problem, it’s an unfinished SLAM. Get free chlorine back to shock level and hold it until you pass all three exit tests. Quitting a green recovery a day early is the classic way to end up here.

5. High CYA masking your chlorine

Cloudy with free chlorine “around 3”? Before anything else, test your CYA. If it’s up around 80–100, that FC of 3 is actually below the ratio, your water isn’t really sanitized, and early algae is clouding it up. Recompute your target as a percentage of your CYA and raise the chlorine. (Here’s that ratio in full.) It’s the most-missed cause on this whole list.

6. Fresh-fill or post-chemical cloud (just wait)

Topped off the water, or recently added calcium or a cal-hypo shock? That can cloud things for a day or two and then clear itself with normal circulation. Don’t chase it with more chemicals. You’ll just spend money watching something that was going to resolve on its own.

The honest shortcut

Nine times out of ten after a green recovery, the answer is levels 1 and 2: run the pump harder and clean the filter. Free, boring, effective. If you want the clarifier-versus-flocculant call: a clarifier clumps fines for your filter to catch; a flocculant sinks everything to be vacuumed to waste. Circulation first, bottle second.

Once the haze lifts, keep it gone by holding your chlorine in the right ratio. Clear water is mostly a maintenance habit, not a rescue.
