You did the hard part and beat the green. Here’s how to never do it again, and it’s refreshingly boring: keep free chlorine in its target band for your CYA, run the pump enough to turn the water over once a day, and don’t waste money chasing phosphates. That’s the entire algae-prevention plan. No weekly potions, no cabinet of specialty bottles the pool store swears by. Algae is a chlorine problem, and chlorine you hold at the right level is a wall algae can’t climb.

Let me give you the three habits, in order of how much they matter.

Habit 1: Hold the ratio (this is 90% of it)

Algae blooms when active chlorine drops too low, and “too low” is defined by your CYA, not by an absolute number. Keep free chlorine at 10–15% of your CYA for everyday maintenance, and never let it fall below 7.5%. At a CYA of 50, that’s a target of roughly 5–8 ppm and a hard floor of about 4. Habit 2: Move the water

Chlorine can’t protect water that’s sitting still. Dead spots (behind ladders, in shaded corners, under a solar cover) are where blooms start, because that’s where chlorine never reaches. Run your pump long enough to turn the whole pool over at least once a day (8–10 hours is a good rule for most residential pools in summer), and give the shady corners and steps a brush now and then. Circulation plus chlorine is the one-two punch; neither works nearly as well alone.

Habit 3: Don’t chase phosphates (save your money)

Here’s where the pool store’s story gets expensive. You’ll get told your phosphates are high and that’s why algae keeps coming: buy this remover. The truth: with free chlorine held at the right ratio to CYA, algae can’t bloom at any common phosphate level. The ratio is your primary defense; phosphate control is a distant secondary lever, and it’s never the first move. A reading around 500 ppb is borderline-not-a-todo. Only if phosphates are genuinely high (north of ~1000 ppb) and you’re battling recurring algae despite solid chlorine is a remover even worth a thought. For almost everyone, it’s a solution to a problem the chlorine already solved.

Watch for the early warning

Prevention also means noticing trouble before it’s visible. Your tell is daily chlorine loss. A normal outdoor pool in summer loses about 1–3 ppm of free chlorine a day. If you suddenly start losing 3 or more ppm a day with no obvious reason (no pool party, no storm), that’s not “just how it is.” It’s rising demand, often the very first sign of algae getting organized or organic gunk building up. Test your combined chlorine and your CYA, and top your free chlorine back up before a haze ever appears. Catching it here is the difference between adding a jug of chlorine and losing a weekend to a full SLAM.
